Back-end cables in Dell EMC storage arrays connect the array controller or storage processor to disk array enclosures (DAEs). Cable failures in the back-end SAS loop can cause drive path degradation or loss, even when all individual drives and controllers are healthy. Front-end Fibre Channel or iSCSI cables connect the array to the SAN fabric or host servers.

Cable failures are a common source of intermittent storage events that can be difficult to diagnose. A partially failed SAS cable may introduce occasional errors without causing complete path failure, resulting in increased error counts in Unisphere event logs and potential RAID reconstruction activity.
