The server backplane is the PCB that connects front-mounted drive bays to the RAID controller and server motherboard. It is an underspecified but critical component - a failed backplane takes the entire internal storage subsystem offline, as the RAID controller loses visibility of all drives simultaneously. In production server environments, a backplane failure typically manifests as all drives going offline simultaneously, triggering a RAID volume failure.
