Heatsinks are a mandatory component when adding a second processor to a UCS server or replacing a failed CPU. UCS servers ship with one heatsink per processor socket - a dual-socket server configured with only one CPU includes a heatsink only for the populated socket. When upgrading from single to dual CPU, the second processor requires its own heatsink or the system will not boot correctly.

Heatsink compatibility is more specific than it may appear. UCS C220 M5 and C240 M5 platforms use different heatsink designs for standard TDP and high-TDP processor configurations - the high-performance heatsink is required for Intel Xeon Gold 6100 and Platinum 8100 series processors above specified TDP thresholds. Installing the wrong heatsink leads to thermal throttling or, in extreme cases, processor shutdown under load.
