Fibre channel HBAs connect PowerEdge servers to SAN storage - NetApp FAS and AFF arrays, Dell EMC VNX and Unity, IBM Storwize, and HDS arrays - over Fibre Channel fabric. In environments running Brocade or Cisco fibre channel switches, the HBA presents the server's WWN to the fabric and enables zoning-based storage access control.

The Dell HBA330 (SAS HBA) is specifically designed for external drive enclosure connectivity - it is used to connect PowerEdge servers to PowerVault MD-series expansion shelves via SAS, without RAID overhead. This pass-through mode is required for software-defined storage platforms such as VMware vSAN, Windows Storage Spaces, and Nutanix AHV, which manage their own redundancy above the raw drive layer.

Dell-branded HBAs carry Dell firmware and integrate cleanly with iDRAC hardware inventory reporting. Using generic Emulex or QLogic HBAs without Dell firmware may generate hardware warning events in iDRAC and OpenManage monitoring.
